Donation drive launched for bear attack survivor as bear encounters dominate debate

A donation drive has begun for N. Narangerel, who survived a brown bear attack in Ulaanbaatar's Bayanzurkh district, as bears straying into settlements again became one of the most discussed topics among Mongolian users on X on October 13.

What happened

According to a timeline by Ergelt.mn, at about 1:00 a.m. on the night of October 7-8 a brown bear attacked a family ger near the Uliastai river and Burkhant valley in the 35th khoroo. A 40-year-old man died at the scene and a 55-year-old woman was taken to the National Trauma and Orthopaedic Research Center. Authorities neutralized the bear later that day.

The survivor

Speaking to Yolo.mn, Sh. Odongua said Narangerel's condition was very poor, her home was wrecked "as if bombed", and the governor of the 35th khoroo had promised to resolve her housing. She announced a donation drive. On X, a post quoting state wrestler G. Gankhuyag describing her skull and jaw fractures and the loss of her home reached a wide audience.

Nationwide picture

Deputy Prime Minister N. Nomtoibayar, head of the State Emergency Commission, said on October 9 that 557 reports of bears entering settlements had been received and nine bears neutralized. On October 10-11 alone, 62 reports were logged, 46 of them from nine soums of Zavkhan province (mpress.mn). The commission also decided to expedite compensation for the family of the man who died, MNB reported. X users debated the culling of bears in the provinces as regrettable but necessary.
