The United States is set to get a new submarine repair center. The Trump administration has selected a new facility at Cleveland, Ohio, as new U.S. Navy Submarine Component Repair Center.
President Donald Trump announced the decision during a rally in Youngstown, Ohio, on October 12. The upcoming center is expected to manufacture, repair and maintain components used in the U.S. Navy’s submarine fleet. Trump described the center as a 46,000-square-foot facility, although several important details, including its precise location, construction timeline, budget and projected employment, are yet to be confirmed publicly.
Facility will support submarine operations
“Northeast Ohio has the skilled workforce, infrastructure and strategic location to support this critical mission for our U.S. Navy,” said Sen. Jon Husted (R-Ohio).
“This facility will strengthen our national security, support military readiness and create jobs in Cleveland. I urged the administration to bring this facility to Northeast Ohio, and I’m proud to see Cleveland selected as its home. I’ll continue fighting for projects that strengthen our nation’s defense and create opportunities for Ohio workers,”
The announcement follows Husted’s letter to Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought and Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao urging the administration to consider Northeast Ohio for the facility.
Submarines are among most strategically important assets
Submarines are among the most strategically important assets in the U.S. military, supporting deterrence, intelligence gathering and a range of undersea operations. However, delays in maintenance and repair have placed pressure on the Navy’s ability to keep its fleet ready for deployment.
The administration’s plan seeks to improve the availability of essential replacement parts by establishing a dedicated center for repairing, refurbishing and managing submarine components. Rather than relying entirely on existing shipyards to source and repair individual parts, a centralized facility could help streamline the process and make critical equipment available when needed.
Cleveland and the wider Northeast Ohio region offer several advantages for a project that requires access to transportation networks and a skilled industrial workforce.
The region has an established manufacturing base and connections to major road, rail and water transportation routes. These capabilities could support the movement of submarine components, raw materials and specialized equipment to and from naval maintenance facilities.
The announcement follows a presidential memorandum issued on August 13, directing the administration to develop a plan for a centralized facility capable of receiving new submarine components and refurbishing existing parts. The initiative is intended to address long-standing challenges in the maintenance and repair of the Navy’s submarine fleet.
The memorandum also called for a plan to establish a fifth public Navy yard, separate from the proposed component repair center. Together, these initiatives are intended to expand the infrastructure available to maintain and support the Navy’s growing fleet requirements.
The component repair center would focus specifically on submarine parts rather than conducting full submarine overhauls. Its effectiveness is expected to depend on how well it integrates with existing shipyards, suppliers and the Navy’s broader maintenance system.
