Al Jazeera’s “101 East” programme on October 17 released “Murder in Malaysia: Justice for Altantuya Shaariibuu,” a documentary on the Mongolian woman killed in Malaysia in 2006. The first part of the two-part special was scheduled to air on October 18 and the second on October 22.
According to Al Jazeera, twenty years ago two Malaysian special forces policemen brutally murdered Altantuya Shaariibuu and destroyed her body with C4 military explosives. But why they killed her has never been established, fuelling suspicions of a political conspiracy to silence her.
The programme’s team worked in Mongolia, Malaysia, France and Australia to investigate allegations of interference in the criminal trial, Altantuya’s suspected links to an allegedly corrupt submarine deal, and claims by the two policemen that they acted on the orders of former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak. Najib, who has been convicted of corruption, vehemently denies any involvement in the murder.
The documentary was widely discussed by Mongolian users on X. Former Prime Minister G.Zandanshatar wrote: “A Mongolian life must not be sacrificed. Mr. S.Shaariibuu should not stand alone in the fight for justice,” and urged people to watch and share the film under the hashtag #JusticeForAltantuya. In a clip shared by X users, G.Zandanshatar stressed that Altantuya’s family and the Mongolian government are seeking accountability.
