Darkhan marks 65th anniversary as all 13 national wrestling champions attend 128-wrestler tournament

Darkhan is marking the 65th anniversary of its founding today, October 17. Founded on October 17, 1961, the city grew into one of Mongolia’s major industrial centers.

An anniversary national wrestling tournament named in honor of Mongolia’s national champions is taking place at Darkhan United Arena in Darkhan-Uul Province, with 128 wrestlers holding national, provincial and soum titles competing. According to livetv.mn and ubn.mn, the winner receives MNT 10 million, the runner-up MNT 8 million, and each semifinalist MNT 5 million.

According to the Darkhan-Uul Province National Wrestling Association, what sets this tournament apart is that all 13 holders of the title of national champion (avarga) are attending as spectators: Darkhan avargas Kh.Bayanmönkh, B.Bat-Erdene, G.Ösökhbayar, A.Sükhbat and N.Batsuuri, Dayan avarga B.Orkhonbayar, and national champions O.Baljinnyam, D.Sumiyabazar, S.Mönkhbat, G.Erkhembayar, Ch.Sanjaadamba, P.Bürentögs and O.Khangai. Posts on X noted that NTV and TV9 are broadcasting the tournament live.

Many users on X congratulated the people of Darkhan on the anniversary. Czech Ambassador to Mongolia Jan Vytopil recalled that Czechs built Darkhan’s cement plant in 1963–1968, wrote that they have named a new Przewalski’s horse foal “Darkhan”, and wished the city continued success.
