Ranked: The Most Used AI Chatbots in 2026
ChatGPT still draws 56.4% of AI chatbot web visits, but Gemini and Claude have taken a much bigger slice over the past year.

Which AI Chatbots Are the Most Used in 2026?
Key Takeaways
ChatGPT drew 56.4% of global AI chatbot website visits in September 2026, with 5.9 billion visits.
Google’s Gemini ranked second with 25.0% of visits, giving the two platforms more than 80% combined.
Claude’s share has more than quadrupled since October 2025, rising from 2.3% to 9.6% and lifting it from fifth to third place.
Nearly four years after its launch, ChatGPT remains the dominant AI chatbot on the web. But its lead has narrowed considerably as Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude gain ground.
Together, the two challengers now account for more than one-third of AI chatbot website traffic, with Claude emerging as one of the biggest movers in the rankings.
This graphic ranks the most used AI chatbots by their share of global website visits in September 2026, using data from Similarweb shared on X and its website. Shares cover desktop and mobile-web visits to each chatbot’s site, excluding app and API use and AI built into other products.
ChatGPT and Gemini Draw Over 80% of AI Chatbot Web Traffic
ChatGPT and Gemini dominate AI chatbot web traffic, leaving the remaining platforms competing for less than one-fifth of visits.
ChatGPT drew an estimated 5.9 billion visits in September 2026, compared with 2.6 billion for Gemini. Third-place Claude attracted roughly 1.0 billion visits, more than DeepSeek, Grok, Copilot, and Perplexity combined.
The table below shows estimated visits to each AI chatbot’s website in September 2026, along with its share of visits:

Estimated visits are calculated from Similarweb’s published shares and its published figure of 5.9 billion visits for ChatGPT in September 2026.
Gemini and Claude were the only major chatbots to gain share between October 2025 and September 2026. Google’s large user base helped distribute Gemini, while Anthropic’s Claude gained traction through its focus on coding and knowledge work, alongside growing public awareness.
Meanwhile, DeepSeek, Grok, Copilot, and Perplexity saw their combined share fall from 11.4% to 8.1%. Claude, which ranked fifth in October 2025, now draws more visits than all four combined.

ChatGPT Is Still Growing, But Rivals Are Growing Faster
ChatGPT’s declining share does not mean its traffic is falling. Its website drew about 5.9 billion visits in September 2026, up from 5.7 billion in January.
Its rivals, however, have grown much faster. Over the past year, Gemini’s monthly visits increased roughly 2.5 times, from 1.1 billion to 2.6 billion, while Claude’s jumped about sixfold, from 157 million to 1.0 billion.
Gemini’s climb followed Google’s launch of Gemini 3 in late 2025. By the end of that year, the Gemini app had surpassed 750 million monthly active users, up from 650 million a quarter earlier.
Claude’s surge accelerated in early 2026. Anthropic ran Super Bowl ads in February promoting Claude as ad-free, around the same time ChatGPT began showing ads to free users. Weeks later, Anthropic refused to allow the Pentagon to use its AI for mass surveillance of Americans or fully autonomous weapons, and Claude climbed to No. 1 on the U.S. App Store.
By April 2026, Claude’s share of chatbot website visits had reached 8.0%, up from 2.3% in October 2025.
Since April, ChatGPT’s share has recovered from 53.7% to 56.4%, while Gemini’s has slipped from 26.7% to 25.0%. Claude has continued gaining share, though at a slower pace, reaching 9.6% in September.
