Ranked: The World’s 10 Biggest Casino Destinations
Las Vegas is the most famous casino market worldwide. Yet the Strip earns less than a third of the revenue of one Chinese city.

Which Casino Destinations Generate the Most Revenue?
Key Takeaways
Macau generated $30.8 billion in gaming revenue in 2025, more than three times the total for the Las Vegas Strip.
Mainland China accounted for nearly three-quarters of Macau’s visitor arrivals.
The Las Vegas Strip ($8.6 billion) ranked second overall and first among the U.S. casino markets shown.
The Las Vegas Strip may be synonymous with gambling, but the world’s highest-earning casino destination is on the other side of the Pacific.
This graphic compares 10 selected casino markets using 2025 gaming revenue figures from the American Gaming Association, Macau gaming authorities, PAGCOR, and Asian Gaming Brief.
Macau: The World’s Gaming Capital
Macau’s $30.8 billion in gaming revenue was roughly 3.6 times that of the Las Vegas Strip in 2025. The Chinese Special Administrative Region also generated more gaming revenue than the other nine markets shown combined.
Singapore ranked third at $7.2 billion, followed by New Jersey’s Atlantic City ($2.9 billion) and the Philippine capital of Manila ($2.6 billion).
The following table ranks 10 major gambling markets by gaming revenue in 2025.

Gaming revenue generally measures wagers retained after winnings are paid out, before operating expenses. It excludes spending on hotel rooms, meals, shopping, and shows, so Macau’s lead does not mean its broader tourism economy is 3.6 times larger.
Geographic boundaries also matter. The Las Vegas Strip covers the city’s famous resort corridor but excludes casinos elsewhere in the greater Las Vegas area. Macau’s figures, meanwhile, cover its broader gaming market.
China’s Gambling Town
A former Portuguese colony, Macau is the only jurisdiction in China where casino gambling is legal. Of its 40.1 million visitor arrivals in 2025, approximately 29 million came from mainland China, accounting for 72% of the total.
Much of that traffic originated nearby, in southern China. The nine mainland cities in the Greater Bay Area, including Guangzhou, contributed 14.8 million arrivals, while Hong Kong supplied another 7.3 million.
Unlike destinations that depend heavily on long-distance flights, Macau draws most of its visitors over land. Roughly 83% arrived by land, and nearly 59% visited without staying overnight. This steady flow of short visits helps explain the scale of Macau’s tourism industry.
How Macau Built Its Casino Industry
Macau’s gambling history stretches back well before its modern resorts. Gambling was legalized in 1847 under Portuguese rule, while a casino concession awarded in 1962 established an operator that dominated the market for decades.
A major turning point came in 2002, when new concessions opened the industry to competition. Las Vegas Sands opened a local resort in 2004, followed by Wynn in 2006 and MGM in 2007, bringing familiar American casino brands into Macau’s expanding market.
Today, Macau is working to broaden its appeal beyond gambling. Its concession framework calls for investment in conventions, entertainment, sports, and cultural attractions.
Yet gaming remains central to its economy, accounting for more than 70% of government tax revenue. That dependence underscores the industry’s importance even as Macau seeks to diversify its tourism offerings.
