School No. 149 in Chingeltei district stops burning coal and switches to LPG heating
The heating at School No. 149, which burned 420 tonnes of raw coal a year, has been switched to liquefied petroleum gas, with Prime Minister N. Uchral attending the opening today.
The heating at Secondary School No. 149 in Ulaanbaatar's Chingeltei district has been switched from coal to liquefied petroleum gas, and the new system was opened today. The Working Office of the National Committee on Reducing Air Pollution carried out the project together with private companies.
Gas boilers replace 420 tonnes of coal
According to Mongolian National Broadcaster (MNB), the school used two Carborobot boilers of 300 kW each and burned an average of 420 tonnes of raw coal a year. The upgrade installed 15 Rinnai gas boilers from Japan, each rated at 48 kW. The school will no longer burn 420 tonnes of solid fuel a year, which is expected to cut air pollution by as much as removing the chimneys of more than 90 households. The system can detect 13 types of hazardous conditions and automatically shut off the gas supply.
SouthGobi Sands financed the work with 1% of its taxable income, and Gazcom carried it out. According to the newspaper Politiko, the project cost more than ₮800 million and took two months.
Prime Minister: "School No. 149 will not burn coal again"
Prime Minister N. Uchral, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Ts. Sandag-Ochir, Mayor of Ulaanbaatar B. Pürevdagva and B. Battüshig, head of the committee's Working Office, attended the opening. Politiko quoted Prime Minister N. Uchral as saying: "School No. 149 will not burn coal again. This is not just a small issue for one school. Behind it is a big goal of getting rid of boilers, chimneys and air pollution." He described the initiative as a good example of solving the problem through tax policy rather than budget spending.
