Mapped: Which Indian States File the Most Patents?
Patent applications offer a window into where innovation is taking shape across India. From new technologies to novel products, patent activity shows where people and businesses are developing ideas they want to protect.
This graphic, created in partnership with Adobe, maps patent filings by state across India. The data comes from IP India and covers total patent applications filed from January 1st, 2010 to July 20th, 2026.
Tamil Nadu Leads India in Patent Filings
Tamil Nadu ranks first, with 92.0K patent applications filed over the period. Maharashtra follows with 79.8K, while Karnataka ranks third with 58.3K.

Together, these three states stand well ahead of the rest of the country. Uttar Pradesh ranks fourth with 39.4K applications, followed by Telangana at 29.3K and Punjab at 28.3K.
Tamil Nadu’s strong education and research ecosystem may help support its patent leadership. Its network of universities, research institutions, and technology-focused industries creates an environment where new ideas can develop into patentable inventions.
Patent Activity Extends Across India
Several other major economic and technology hubs also rank highly. Delhi recorded 26.6K patent applications, followed by Andhra Pradesh at 21.3K and Gujarat at20.4K.
The data also reveals a wide gap in patent activity across India. While the three leading states each recorded more than 50K applications, many parts of the country recorded fewer than 10K over the period.
Turning Complex Documents Into Clear Insights
Behind every patent sits a dense collection of technical information. Reading and comparing these documents can take time.
As India files patents at record pace, the volume of dense technical documentation is growing just as fast. With Adobe Acrobat’s generativeAI PDF tools, you can use a built-inPDF summarizer to turn long filings into key points, orchat with PDF to get instant answers on the details that matter. It helps India’s innovators and business leaders move from information to insight in seconds, and spend less time reading and more time building.
