Ranked: America’s 20 Most Popular Dog Breeds
The French Bulldog topped American Kennel Club registrations for a fourth year in 2025, while the Dachshund climbed into the top five.

Which Dog Breeds Are Most Popular in America?
Key Takeaways
The French Bulldog ranked first in American Kennel Club registrations for the fourth consecutive year in 2025.
The Dachshund climbed to fifth place, entering the top five for the first time since 2003.
For 31 years, the Labrador Retriever was America’s most popular dog breed. That streak ended in 2022, when the French Bulldog took the top spot and began a new era in the rankings.
This graphic ranks the 20 most popular dog breeds in America based on 2025 registrations with the American Kennel Club (AKC). The full ranking below covers 202 breeds and excludes mixed breeds, including doodles.
French Bulldogs Remain America’s Favorite Breed
The top four breeds held their positions from 2024, with the Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, and German Shepherd Dog following the French Bulldog.
The AKC attributes the French Bulldog’s popularity partly to its small size and adaptability to city living. Its compact frame makes it an appealing option for owners living in apartments or homes with limited space.
Beyond the top five, the ranking includes everything from small companion dogs to large working breeds. See where your favorite breed landed in the full list of 202 AKC-recognized breeds below, based on number of AKC registrations in 2025:

The Dachshund Climbs Into the Top Five
The Dachshund moved from sixth in 2024 to fifth in 2025, displacing the Poodle, which had held fifth place since 2021, according to the AKC.
The Dachshund is one of two hounds in the top 20, alongside the seventh-ranked Beagle. Both were originally bred for hunting, as were the Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, and German Shorthaired Pointer, which belong to the AKC’s Sporting group.
Smaller companion breeds are also well represented. Three breeds in the AKC’s Toy group made the top 20: the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Yorkshire Terrier, and Pomeranian. The Pomeranian climbed from 22nd to 19th in 2025.
Larger dogs remain popular as well. Five of the top 20 belong to the Working group, including the eighth-ranked Rottweiler and the Bernese Mountain Dog at No. 20. Originally bred for tasks such as guarding and pulling carts, many of these dogs are now family companions.
