Grok Imagine releases a seven-minute first episode of its AI-generated 'Odyssey'
Three months after Elon Musk promised a full-length, AI-made film of Homer's 'Odyssey' by year-end, Grok has published a seven-minute first episode. Critics found some shots realistic but the whole lacking in artistry.

Elon Musk's Grok Imagine AI video tool published the seven-minute first episode of an AI-generated "Odyssey" series on X on Friday, Oct. 23. The release credited a "creative collaboration" with Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker, both of which specialize in AI filmmaking.
In July, Musk wrote that "before this year ends, Grok Imagine will make a full-length movie of The Odyssey that is historically accurate and true to the art of Homer." Variety reported that "Doctor Strange" director Scott Derrickson criticized the project at the time. Musk has repeatedly attacked the casting of Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey," which opened in July and became a major box office success, selling out IMAX screenings for months.
TechCrunch weekend editor Anthony Ha wrote that the episode was not as "spectacularly ugly" as he expected and that some shots could pass for real actors sailing a real sea, making it more impressive than other AI videos Musk has posted. But he said it lacks "any sense of artistry, inspiration, or human interest," with a long voiceover backstory followed by stilted dialogue that leaves viewers "no reason to care about anyone or anything on-screen."
The release is the latest test of how far AI video tools have come toward long-form storytelling. Grok offered to publish a breakdown of how the episode was made, and there is no firm date yet for the full-length film Musk promised.
