Snow in the mountains and a cold snap in central and eastern Mongolia forecast for next week

Mongolia's National Agency for Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring says snow will fall in mountain areas next week, winds will strengthen across the Gobi and steppe, and it will turn colder in the north of the central and eastern provinces on October 29.

Today

On October 25, light snow of 0.0–1.0 mm is falling in some soums of Govi-Altai, Zavkhan, Khuvsgul and Umnugovi, with strong winds in the Gobi and steppe. There is no snow elsewhere, and skies are variably cloudy in most areas. Ulaanbaatar will see no snow, with temperatures around 0°C.

The coming days

From October 25 to 28, snow is expected in the Khangai, Khuvsgul and Khentii mountains, with wind in the Gobi, steppe and grasslands. On October 26, 0.0–1.0 mm of snow is forecast in parts of Zavkhan, Khuvsgul and Selenge and in the north-eastern soums of Tuv province; on October 28, 0.0–1.0 mm in parts of Uvs, Zavkhan and Khuvsgul; and on October 29, 0.0–2.0 mm in parts of Zavkhan, Khuvsgul, Arkhangai, Bulgan, Selenge and Tuv and in the northern soums of Khentii and Dornod.

Winds will reach 14–16 metres per second in the Gobi and steppe on October 26–27. Gusts of 18–20 metres per second with dust storms are expected in the Altai mountains on October 28 and in the Gobi and steppe on October 29.

Temperatures

• Darkhad depression and the headwaters of the Zavkhan, Zag and Baidrag rivers: -23 to -28°C at night, -7 to -12°C by day.
• Altai, Khangai, Khuvsgul and Khentii mountains and the Ider, Tes, Tuul and Terelj valleys: -16 to -21°C at night, -1 to -6°C by day.
• Southern Gobi: -2 to -7°C at night, +6 to +11°C by day.
• Northern Gobi, the Dornod-Dariganga plains and the Ulz and Khalkh river valleys: -7 to -12°C at night, +1 to +6°C by day.
• Elsewhere: -11 to -16°C at night, -2 to +3°C by day.
