North Korean leader Kim Jong Un made a brief visit to the Chinese border city of Dandong on October 24. South Korea's Yonhap news agency, citing government sources, reported that he crossed the recently opened New Yalu (Amnok) River Bridge linking the two countries.

According to China's Xinhua news agency, Kim was greeted by Wang Huning, a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party's Political Bureau and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. Wang conveyed greetings from Chinese President Xi Jinping. The two laid a flower basket at the memorial hall to the Chinese People's Volunteers who fought in the Korean War and toured a car factory in Dandong.

Xinhua said Kim thanked China for its long-standing support for North Korea's socialist cause and expressed hope that the two countries would expand their historic friendship and practical cooperation to bring tangible benefits to their peoples. Wang said the visit would strengthen their traditional friendship and deepen political trust. Kim returned home the same day.

The visit came a day before the 76th anniversary of the Chinese People's Volunteers entering the Korean War. Pyongyang and Beijing mark October 25 as the anniversary.

According to Yonhap, the four-lane, 3,026-meter bridge was completed in 2014 with about $310 million in Chinese investment. Its opening was delayed for years because North Korea did not finish the connecting roads and customs facilities on its side. The bridge officially opened on October 15 and is expected to strengthen economic ties between the two countries.

Kim last visited China in September 2025, and this was his sixth visit to the country. Next month China will host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Shenzhen, which U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to attend. Trump has said he hopes to meet the North Korean leader, but Pyongyang has not responded, Yonhap reported.
