UFO? Mysterious lights over Tehran spark online buzz 50 years after 1976 sighting

A strange cluster of lights was seen over Tehran, and videos of the event are quickly spreading on social media. The footage surfaced on September 21, during a time of increased military tension in the area. This has led people online to guess whether the object is a drone, an aircraft, or a UFO.

The videos show bright lights moving in the night sky. Still, the current footage does not give enough details to figure out the object’s size, height, distance, or speed. A popular Reddit post says more videos from Tehran are coming out, which is fueling more online discussion.

What was seen over Tehran?

Several social media users have suggested that the object may be a drone or multiple drones. Its illuminated appearance and movement have been cited as reasons for the theory. There is currently no reliable public evidence, however, linking the object to a specific Iranian or foreign drone.

Another possibility is that the videos show an aircraft seen from far away. At night, aircraft navigation lights can look strange in videos because of things like the atmosphere, camera settings, zoom, and other visual effects. A 50-year-old UFO mystery

The footage has drawn renewed attention because it appeared almost exactly 50 years after the famous 1976 Tehran UFO incident.

On September 19, 1976, residents and officials in Tehran reported seeing a bright unidentified object in the sky. Iranian authorities reportedly scrambled two F-4 Phantom fighter jets to investigate the sighting.

A surviving U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency-related record describes the 1976 event as a multi-witness, multi-sensor incident. Despite the military response and extensive reports surrounding the encounter, the object’s identity was never conclusively established.

The modern footage does not establish a connection with that earlier incident. For now, the available videos provide too little information to determine what was moving across Tehran’s sky.
