NineDot opens 20 MW Bronx battery site to power 20,000 homes, boost New York’s power grid

A new NineDot battery energy storage system in Hunts Point, the Bronx, will deliver nearly 20 megawatts to about 20,000 homes during peak grid hours.

The company recently held a ribbon-cutting ceremony alongside elected officials, policymakers, and community organizations.

Vanessa Gibson, Bronx Borough President, noted that the new storage system aims to address the environmental injustice and disinvestment the Bronx has long suffered.

“We’re honored to bring this battery storage site to the Hunts Point community,” said Adam Cohen, NineDot’s chief technology officer and co-founder. “Hunts Point has historically been overburdened by high-emitting fossil fuels, and this battery storage facility marks an inflection point in improving the local environment and grid reliability.”

The system is expected to be fully operational in time for next summer’s heat waves and will have enough capacity to power nearly 20,000 homes during peak grid hours.

Battery storage targets peak demand

According to NineDot, Hunts Point has faced significant pollution pressures for decades. More than 10,000 diesel trucks travel through the area each day, while two high-emissions peaker power plants operate in nearby Port Morris.

In 2023, Hunts Point–Mott Haven recorded asthma-related emergency room visits at two to three times the citywide average, according to data cited in the release. Because the problem stems from fine particulate air pollution, energy storage will help retire gas-fired plants.

As the NineDot battery storage site replaced the former home of a fuel oil trucking company, the project comes as New York City aims to transition to a cleaner, more resilient future by reducing its dependence on fossil-fuel “peaker” plants, which operate during periods of high electricity demand.

NineDot said battery storage could also provide grid resiliency as Hunts Point moves toward electrification of its produce and fish market and truck fleet.

“Battery energy storage is an important tool for modernizing New York’s electric grid and making it more resilient to extreme weather and high-stress conditions,” said David Sandbank, senior vice president at the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. “This Hunts Point project demonstrates how the right policies, partners and programs can deliver benefits for communities throughout New York City and beyond.”

NineDot expands NYC battery fleet

NineDot’s existing battery systems have already been deployed during periods of extreme electricity demand.

During New York’s July 1-4, 2026 heat wave, nine NineDot battery projects exported nearly 34 megawatts during peak hours, as per the news release. The support was given to Con Edison’s local power network and the statewide power transmission system.

That equates to removing the electricity demand of roughly 50,000 window air conditioners from the grid or powering approximately 34,000 households for four hours each day during peak demand.

Currently, NineDot operates 11 projects across six locations in Staten Island and the Bronx, totaling 39 MW. The company also has more than 60 projects in development and a pipeline exceeding 1 GW.

NineDot said it remains on track toward its goal of having 400 MW of battery storage in operation, under construction, or in development by the end of 2026.
