Ranked: The World’s Largest Vehicle Producers

Which Countries Build the Most Vehicles?

Key Takeaways

  • China produced nearly 35 million vehicles in 2025, accounting for over a third of global production.

  • Vehicle production declined across the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, with Canada posting the steepest drop of the three.

  • India increased vehicle production by 7.9%, the second-fastest growth rate among the top 20 producers.

Factories around the world built nearly 100 million vehicles in 2025, led by major manufacturing hubs across Asia, North America, and Europe.

This graphic ranks 20 leading countries by reported vehicle production in 2025 using the latest figures from the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA). Figures generally cover both passenger and commercial vehicles, subject to country coverage specifications.

China’s Lead Keeps Getting Bigger

China set a new vehicle-production record in 2025, extending its 17-year run as the world’s largest producer. The country manufactured 34.5 million vehicles, more than triple U.S. production.

Even at that scale, Chinese output grew by 10.4%. The additional 3.2 million vehicles exceeded Brazil’s entire annual production.

The table below ranks the world’s top 20 vehicle producers in 2025.

India produced nearly 6.5 million vehicles in 2025, reinforcing its position as the world’s fourth-largest producer.

The South Asian country’s domestic market helps explain its manufacturing scale: passenger-vehicle sales reached 4.49 million in 2025, compared with about 860,000 exported. That gives automakers a large home customer base alongside overseas demand.

China’s Cost Advantage Goes Global

China’s production lead rests partly on the sheer scale of its factories. Some of its largest electric-vehicle plants can produce more than one million cars annually, spreading factory costs across far more vehicles than smaller plants can.

Lower labor costs, government support, and a vast battery industry reinforce that advantage. For electric vehicles, years of manufacturing experience and widespread use of lower-cost lithium iron phosphate batteries help Chinese producers compete on price.

Those advantages are increasingly reaching overseas markets. China’s electric-car exports doubled to more than 2.5 million in 2025, while Chinese brands accounted for four in five Chinese-made electric cars sold abroad, up from fewer than two in five in 2021.

A Dip in North America’s Auto Industry

Production fell across all three major North American producers in 2025. Together, the U.S., Mexico, and Canada manufactured approximately 491,000 fewer vehicles than in 2024, a combined decline of 3.1% even as global output increased.

Behind those national totals is a shared manufacturing network. Parts can cross the region’s borders as many as eight times before final assembly, meaning a vehicle assembled in one country can contain work performed in all three.

That interdependence means a slowdown at an assembly plant can reduce orders for suppliers across the border. Meanwhile, new tariffs and reporting requirements in 2025 added costs and paperwork to a production system built around moving components between countries.
