The guided-missile destroyer USS John Basilone arrived at its new homeport of Rota, Spain, on Oct. 14, officially transferring from Naval Station Mayport, Florida, and joining U.S. naval forces in Europe, the Navy said.
The multi-mission ship, designated DDG 122, joins units assigned to Commander, Task Force 65 and Destroyer Squadron 60. It will support regional maritime security operations and routine training with NATO allies and regional partners. Commissioned in late 2024, it can conduct air defense, anti-submarine warfare and surface warfare operations.
Leaders welcome the crew
Vice Adm. J.T. Anderson, commander of U.S. 6th Fleet, said operating in the European theater gives crews “valuable opportunities to project combat power” and maintain readiness while defending the maritime approaches to the homeland. He added that the fleet looks forward to the ship joining its forward-deployed units.
Capt. Charles Chmielak, commander of U.S. Naval Activities Spain and Naval Station Rota, welcomed the crew to “Team Rota.” He said the base remains committed to providing the operational support Sailors and ships need to stay ready, responsive and prepared for the challenges of an increasingly complex security environment.
“Our crew is honored to bring Gunnery Sgt. Basilone’s legacy to Europe,” said Cmdr. T. Max Murphy, the ship’s commanding officer. “We are eager to integrate into the Rota community, work alongside our Spanish hosts, and support America’s ability to deter and win future conflicts.”
A namesake who earned two top honors
The ship honors Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. John Basilone, who received the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Guadalcanal in 1942 and was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for bravery at the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945. He was the only enlisted Marine in World War II to receive both decorations.
The 6th Fleet’s role
Headquartered in Naples, Italy, U.S. 6th Fleet conducts the full spectrum of joint and naval operations, often with allied and partner forces, to advance shared interests and promote maritime stability in Europe and Africa. With John Basilone now in Rota, the destroyer operates in the fleet’s area of responsibility.
